Blogging 101 Anyone?

Okay I am a blogging virgin. Well, maybe not a virgin but let's say I'm a novice. So, since I can't get no satisfaction from Google Help, I will ask anyone out there to answer a few questions for me. Plus this is a shameless ploy to get a few comments.

1. What is feedburner? I think I have signed up for it but I have no idea what it does.

2. What is a meme? I used to think is was the french word for mother, but I guess that's only if you live in France.

3. What are the purpose of buttons and how do I get them on my page? I saw a challenge from one of the blogs I read and she told us to to link to her. I'm like, WHAAAA???

4. How in the world and Where in the world to people get these cool images to put on their pages? I mean, I can upload photos to my blog but I don't know much 'bout these cute little pictures of kitty cats and smokin' hot pictures of Matthew McConau-hottey.

5. Does is matter that my username (Texan Mama) and the name of my blog (whoputmeinchargeofthesepeople.blogspot.com) are different? Should I change one or the other? Would it make it easier for people to find me?

Okaaaayyyyy.... GO! I'll be waiting to hear from you!

Don't know much about Feedburner. Let me know what you find out. I have it, but I can't get it to actually reflect subscribers.

Meme- a blog word (you can wikipedia that by the way) for a kind of chain letter. you know those emails - do this survey? then forward it on and have people send it back to you. Kind of like that. You do the meme (follow the rules) and then "tag" others to do it. Tagging means you link to them in your blog post when you do the meme (you can link when you are composing a post with the hyperlink icon by highlighting whatever text you are referring to and then you type in the URL (or copy and paste it as I do) to the site you are linking to) and then you leave the person you are tagging a comment so they know you are tagging them and sometimes they do the meme and sometimes not.

The buttons are for various things. They can be to advertise something or to refer to something or to refer to someone else's blog. If the person that created the button knows what they are doing, you can just download the code they give you and it will put in the link AND the picture/button in your side bar when you go to customize in your layout.

The cool images are basically pirated off the internet. Go to Google and then type in whatever you want a picture of. Then at the top of the screen, choose IMAGES instead of website and you will be inundated with pictures. Then people post those in their sidebars or intheir posts. You really should have permission before you do this, though as most are copyrighted.

I don't think it matters that your name and your blogname are different. I think it is fine. It is up to you. What you could do to make it easier is change your name in blogger (and then again on the typepad and wordpress blogs you comment on)to Texan Mama @ whoputmeinchargeofthesepeople or something like that. I recently did that so I was not one of 5 Angie's commenting and the blogger could know who I was easier. I saw this suggestion on someone's blog.

Class dismissed.

I think Angie covered everything pretty well. Feedburner is a system of tracking your site stats and the blogs that you subscribe to. I've been blogging for a year and I still don't have it completely figured out...

I post as Bridgett but my blogs are all different names. I don't think it matters at all. I have 4 blogs (two are done--year long projects) but have kept the same name the whole time.

Everybody else is more eloquent on the other questions than I would have been...

Don't worry about all that - it comes to you bit by bit. Howdy to a sister Texan!

I am no expert, by any means. Angie covered most of the answers better than I could have, FeedBurner confuses me- I'm still trying to figure that one out.
The buttons are just little gimicky things- like the SITS one you have. I designed a bunch just for fun because there are some poorly designed ones out there and it drove me nuts!

And I agree with Texan Mama@ whoputmeinchargeofthesepeople. I think you should either change one or use them together. I know I've been like- who's whoputmeinchargeofthesepeople? I think of you as Texan Mama...

Good questions all...

I don't get feedburner yet either... guess that is one of the great mysteries here.

Meme I get, but the links don't always work, and sometimes you cant figure out how to get back to who sent if if their link doesnt work.

Angie covered buttons & images.

The name thing is just ease of use and so people can recognise you easily. I like 'TexanMama@whoputmeinchargeofthesepeople.' as well. Although that is a bunch to type each time, it will always be clear who you are and what blog is yours.

Nobody knows it all...
